My background

I have worked with clients in a variety of contexts, including working at a center, in private practice as well as church settings. I enjoy training and equipping future therapists as a board-approved supervisor for the state of Virginia. I am also an adjunct professor at both Bethel Seminary and at Gordon Conwell Seminary, where I teach on Pastoral Care and Human Sexuality. I’ve taught and lectured at Reformed Theological Seminary and at many conferences and workshops.

Central to my therapeutic approach is my belief that at our core we are all relational beings, created to be in relationship with others. My Christian faith informs my conviction that all people have dignity, value and worth. Sometimes our life stories and experiences hinder us from experiencing and growing in healthy relationships. It is my privilege and honor to be invited into your story to work with you, no matter who you are and where you come from. I believe that health, growth and healing are possible.

When we’re not enjoying river life at our vacation home on the Shenandoah River you will find my husband Ed and me in northern Virginia where we live and have raised our children. We are blessed with two adult children and two grandchildren. I enjoy gardening, exploring with my Corgi and kayaking.

My certifications and approach

Over the years it has been my privilege to work with adults, couples and families with:

Sexual addiction
(working with both addicts and partners)
Depression
Anxiety
Grief and loss
Marriage and pre-marital counseling
Attachment issues
Relational stress
Trauma
Family of origin struggles

I use an integrated approach to counseling that incorporates evidence-based practices such as Cognitive-Behavioral Therapy (CBT), Dialectal-Based Therapy (DBT), Eye Movement Desensitization Reprocessing (EMDR) therapy, Personal Inductive Therapy/Inner Child Therapy (PIT). I have been trained in the Gotten Marriage Counseling Model, Pia Mellody’s PIT inner child work and I am EMDR. Most importantly, my approach will be centered on your needs. Together, we’ll work towards understanding, growth and health.

An important part of my dedication to the profession of counseling is my commitment to training and mentoring interns and residents in counseling. These individuals practice and work under my supervision, fulfilling the requirements to become fully licensed in Virginia.
